| Here's to you, Mate! |
I heard the news roughly 24 hours ago, and I still can hardly believe such a passionate, exuberant person's life is over. I think we as a society are pretty hard-pressed for heroes anymore, but Steve Irwin is the rare kind of person I'd qualify as one. Such a passion and love for animals, for his family, and to bring the message of conservation to anyone who would listen...
I've checked to try and visit the Crocodile Hunter homepage throughout the day and night, with no success as of yet. Apparently they are flooded with traffic; no surprise there...
I love that one of his best friends in life was his beloved pit bull, Sui.
He knew how inherently wonderful these dogs are, despite the unfortunate bad rap they have.
One of the catch-phrases I've somewhat adopted as my own is, Isn't she goa-geous?!! ... In fact I'd just said it earlier yesterday, when Jeff and I were on a train ride though the redwoods up in the nearby Santa Cruz mountains. It was Goa-geous up there...
To Steve Irwin's critics: I hope you can reserve judgment over his "scandals" until you hear the full story. Tonight I watched a Larry King interview that was done shortly after the incident where Steve fed a crocodile with one hand while holding his baby boy in his other arm. Steve is sincere and humble in talking about this situation, as he also is with other criticisms people have of him, but he doesn't back down from his passion or apologize for his goal to bring awareness to everyone about the need for conservation. There was and still is so much to be learned from a person like him, and in many different ways...
To Steve's friends and family: My heart and prayers go out to you. I hope the support and love from all the people you shared Steve with over the years brings you some measure of comfort during your loss. He most certainly will be missed, and no one could possibly take his place.
Here's to you mate: Thanks for all the memories, laughs and lessons. I like to think you're up there in the Big Pond in the sky, swimming with and hugging the crocs and other critters you were never able to cuddle here on earth! We'll sure miss you buddy! |

I never heard of him till he died

I wouldn't call myself a fan of his TV shows, but I admired his dedication to the preservation of animals and their habitats.
Where has Mark been hiding anyway? Never heard of him?

I loved crazy ol' Steve Irwin. And you know I am not the biggest animal buff...but I loved him and his awesome ways. I thought it was really sad that he died, but I guess I can't imagine him going any other way.
He was clearly one of those blessed with charisma and talent and he used them both amazingly well.
